Summer Fair: 12-16 August

Four hundred and thirty dealers, five days, free entry. The plane trees don't care that it's Easter.

Barjac is a small Renaissance town perched above the Cèze valley, and twice a year it fills with dealers from across France - furniture, silverware, ceramics, linen, curiosities. The fair has run since 1972. It does not need your Instagram post.

The serious buyers arrive Thursday morning for the déballage, when stock is still being unpacked and the best pieces go first.

By Saturday the atmosphere has shifted: more browsers, more noise, better coffee queue. A concert by a nationally known artist runs mid-fair - in the south, even an antiques market needs a performance.

The squares and alleyways fill with furniture, silverware, ceramics, linen, curiosities - the serious dealers arrive Thursday morning for the déballage and the best pieces go first.

By Saturday, the browsers have arrived, and the atmosphere shifts.

Barjac itself is worth the trip. A hilltop village with a château, a handful of reasonable restaurants, and the Cèze gorges ten minutes down the road.

During the Summer Fair combine with a swim - La Roque-sur-Cèze and the Cascades du Sautadet are on the way back.
