Getting to Uzès and beyond | The Gard, France: A Local's Guide to Arriving

Interactive Find Your Route Tool

While the Luberon and the Côte d'Azur take the headlines, the Gard takes its time. It sits west of the Rhône - neither obviously Provence nor obviously not - and that ambiguity is part of its appeal.

The Pont du Gard brings the coach parties; they photograph the aqueduct and leave. What remains is quieter: a medieval duchy with a Saturday market, garrigue hills that smell of thyme and wild herbs, rivers tempting enough to swim in by June.

The region is well-connected - three airports, two TGV stations, a decent bus network - but none of it is obvious until someone points you at it. That's what this guide is for.

La Flânerie is in Euzet-les-Bains, a former thermal spa village in the garrigue hills north-west of Uzès. Once you're in the region, everything is close. Getting here is the part that rewards a little planning.

London to La Flanérie

Recommended Eurostar + TGV via Lille

Eurostar to Lille International (1h20), then TGV to Avignon TGV. Two options for the connection: TGV from Lille International, or a 5-minute walk to Lille Flandres for services south.

This is the route I take myself. Book the full trip through sncf-connect.com rather than separate tickets — you get European passenger compensation coverage if TGV delays cause a missed connection. Allow 90 minutes at Lille.

Alternative Fly to Montpellier

easyJet or BA from Gatwick (year-round), easyJet from Manchester (new 2026, seasonal). ~1h45 flight, then 84km / 55 min drive.

Quickest door-to-door if the flight times suit. Ryanair has left Montpellier, but easyJet + BA cover Gatwick well. Book car hire ahead — stock runs out in summer.

Alternative Fly to Nîmes (London: summer only)

Ryanair from Stansted, seasonal. Then 47km / 35 min drive to Euzet. Shortest transfer of any airport.

Small airport, through security in minutes. London route is summer only, but Brussels Charleroi runs year-round if connecting from elsewhere.

Alternative Drive via Eurotunnel or ferry

~1,100km from London / 10–12 hours driving. Calais to Euzet ~1,000km / 9–10 hours. Tolls ~€70–80.

Only worth it if you want the car for your stay and plan to break the journey. The A75 via Millau Viaduct is the scenic route.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Paris to La Flanérie

Recommended TGV from Gare de Lyon

Paris to Nîmes: ~2h50. Then 36km / 30 min drive, or liO 152 bus to Uzès (35 min).

The civilised option. Book 2–3 months ahead for best fares. Pick up a hire car at Nîmes Gare.

Alternative Drive

~700km / 6.5–7 hours via A6–A7–A9. Tolls ~€55–65.

The maths usually favours the train unless you’re bringing luggage for a long stay. If driving, the A75 via Millau is toll-free and more interesting than the Rhône corridor.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Lille to La Flanérie

Recommended TGV direct to Avignon or Nîmes

Lille to Avignon TGV: ~4 hours. Lille to Nîmes: ~4.5 hours. Then hire car or bus.

Check sncf-connect.com — direct services run but not on all days. May require a change in Paris (Gare du Nord to Gare de Lyon, 20 min by metro).

Alternative Drive

~950km / 8.5–9 hours. A26–A5–A6–A7–A9. Tolls ~€75–85.

Long day. Break it around Lyon or take the A75 via Clermont-Ferrand for a more interesting second half.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Brussels to La Flanérie

Recommended Thalys/TGV via Lille or Paris

Brussels to Lille (35 min), then TGV to Nîmes (~4.5h) or Avignon (~4h). Total: ~5.5–6 hours.

The Lille connection is easiest. Book the full trip through sncf-connect.com rather than separate tickets — you get European passenger compensation coverage if TGV delays cause a missed connection. Allow 90 minutes at Lille. Alternatively, Thalys to Paris Gare du Nord, metro to Gare de Lyon, TGV south — adds 30–40 min but more frequent services.

Alternative Drive

~1,050km / 9–10 hours. Tolls ~€80–90.

Similar logic to Lille. The train is less tiring and often comparable on total cost once you factor tolls and fuel.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Amsterdam to La Flanérie

Recommended Thalys/TGV via Brussels or Paris

Amsterdam to Brussels (1h50), then onward to Nîmes or Avignon. Total: ~7–8 hours with changes.

Book through-tickets on sncf-connect.com or nsinternational.com. The Brussels connection is usually the smoothest.

Alternative Fly to Montpellier

KLM flies Amsterdam–Montpellier year-round. ~2h flight + 84km / 55 min drive.

Year-round KLM service makes this reliable. Book car hire ahead for summer.

Alternative Drive

~1,200km / 11–12 hours. Tolls (France section) ~€70–80.

A two-day drive. Consider train for speed, car for flexibility on arrival.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Germany to La Flanérie

Recommended TGV via Strasbourg or Paris

Frankfurt to Paris (3h50 by ICE/TGV), then TGV to Nîmes (2h50). Total: ~8 hours from Frankfurt.

From southern Germany (Stuttgart, Munich), driving via Switzerland may be faster. From the Rhineland, train via Paris or Strasbourg is more comfortable.

Alternative Fly to Montpellier or Marseille

Discover Airlines flies Frankfurt–Montpellier. Marseille has Lufthansa from Frankfurt plus wider European hub connections. 1.5–2h flight + drive.

Montpellier (84km to Euzet) is closer than Marseille (136km). Marseille has more route choice from Germany overall.

Alternative Drive

Frankfurt: ~1,100km / 10 hours. Munich: ~1,000km / 9 hours. Swiss motorway vignette required if routing via Switzerland (€40).

The Rhine valley route via Strasbourg and Lyon avoids Swiss tolls. Beautiful but long.

Transport schedules, routes and prices are provided as a guide and may change. Always verify directly with the carrier before booking. La Flanérie accepts no responsibility for third-party service changes.

Avignon to La Flanérie

Best route Drive via Pont du Gard

59km / 50 min. Take the D981 past the Pont du Gard — you can see the aqueduct from the road — then north through Uzès to Euzet.

The scenic arrival. If it’s your first visit and it’s daylight, this is the way to come.

Alternative Drive via Remoulins (faster)

Take the N100/D6100 to Remoulins, then D981 north. Slightly faster, less scenic.

Alternative Bus (liO 115)

liO line 115 (Avignon–Alès) serves Euzet. Check lio.laregion.fr for current timetable.

Possible without a car, but you’ll want your own transport for exploring once here.

Alternative Bus (liO 152)

liO line 152 (Nîmes–Uzès–Saint-Ambroix). Nîmes to Uzès in 35 min, then local connection or taxi to Euzet (19km).

The 152 runs regularly. Check lio.laregion.fr for times.

Useful if arriving at Marseille airport and prefer not to drive the full distance.

The airports - which one to choose

Pale yellow icon image of an airplane

Nîmes

Nîmes–Alès–Camargue–Cévennes Airport [FNI] Airport (47km) is the closest. Ryanair, generally summer-only. Across the board - Brussels Charleroi, Fes, and Marrakech run year-round. London Stansted and Dublin are seasonal. Small airport, fast through security, car hire desks right there.

Montpellier

Montpellier–Méditerranée Airport [MPL] Airport (84km) is the practical choice for most. Fifteen airlines in 2026, including EasyJet and BA from Gatwick year-round, a new Manchester route, and KLM from Amsterdam. The airport is expanding aggressively - 44 destinations in 2026.

Marseille

Marseille Provence [MRS] Airport (136km) is the big one - 38 airlines, 125 destinations, long-haul to Shanghai and Montreal. If you need a specific carrier or a hub connection, this is it. The drive is longer but entirely autoroute.

Avignon

Avignon-Provence Airport has had no scheduled commercial flights since Flybe collapsed in 2023. Don't count on it.

Deaux

Alès-Deaux / Aérodrome d'Alès Cévennes (10km) is a private airfield. If this is your world, you're ten minutes away from La Flânerie, across the garrigue!

The train- my preferred route from London

Eurostar Logo

My route: Eurostar to Lille International (1h20), then either TGV (Fast Train) from Lille International or a 5-minute walk to Lille Flandres for budget services south to Avignon TGV. It avoids crossing Paris entirely, and the connection is straightforward.

St Pancras International, London
La Flânerie, Euzet-les-Bains Euzet-les-Bains

A few hours on a train. ← The journey back → On second thoughts…

From Paris, the TGV from Gare de Lyon to Nîmes takes about 2h50. Three hours, no airport security. Pick up a hire car at Nîmes Gare.

The regional stations at Alès (15km) and Nozières-Brignon (13km) are useful if you're arriving on local TER services from Nîmes or further afield. Not fast TGV stops, but much closer to La Flânerie.

Note: The direct Eurostar to Avignon is currently suspended (2026).

The bus - yes, it reaches Euzet

The liO network covers the Gard well:

LiO Bus Line 115

Line 152

(Nîmes → Uzès → Saint-Ambroix) — Nîmes to Uzès in 35 minutes

Line 115

(Alès → Avignon) — serves Euzet directly

green-vintage-car

You can manage without a car. But the wild swimming spots, hilltop villages, and vineyard visits that make this area worth coming for are generally off the bus routes.

A car or motorbike gives you the freedom to explore.

Manual gearbox is standard in France. Automatic costs more and has less availability — request it well in advance.
Fuel. The supermarket stations (Intermarché, Super U) are cheapest. Village stations close early.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not strictly. The liO bus network serves Euzet, connects Avignon, Uzès and Euzet, and Nîmes to Uzès and beyond - so the basics are covered. But a car or motorbike is the best way to explore. The wild swimming spots, smaller villages, and garrigue trails that make this area worth visiting are generally off the bus routes. If you like to wander at your own pace, hire something with wheels.

  • Montpellier for most European flights - 84km, 55 minutes, good route choice. Nîmes in Summer (47km, closest). Marseille for long-haul.

  • From Paris or Lyon, almost always. My preferred route from London is Eurostar to Lille International, then TGV from Lille International (or a 5-minute walk to Lille Flandres) to Avignon TGV. The direct London–Avignon Eurostar is currently suspended, but the Lille connection is straightforward and avoids crossing Paris entirely.

Where to Stay Near Uzès

I'm biased, obviously, but La Flânerie exists because I wanted to create the kind of place I'd want to discover and return to: somewhere with genuine character that doesn't try too hard, in a village that's still a community, close enough to Uzès to pop in for market but far enough for real quiet.

A vaulted ground-floor apartment in a restored 17th-century village house in Euzet-les-Bains. Secluded courtyard. Kitchen that actually works - you'll want it after market. Limestone walls a metre thick that keep the interior cool in summer without air conditioning. Walk-in shower. Good bed. Wifi that holds up for a film in the evening.

It sleeps two, and I hope you find it an inspiration for mixing local brocante finds in a recently designed interior.

15km from Uzès.
20 minutes from the Pont du Gard.
30 minutes from Nîmes.
